School Information During Inclement Weather

The decision to close school because of inclement weather conditions in the Henry-Senachwine Unit School District No. 5 will take into account several factors with the safety and welfare of the students as the primary consideration.  Every attempt will be made for adequate notification to parents through the appropriate media.  In most cases a decision will be made by 6:30 A.M.

For those families that have signed up for the automated notification system (School Messenger) you will be contacted for weather and other emergency situations by phone, cell phone or email.  You may join the School Messenger Notification System by calling the grade school at 309-364-2531 or the high school at 309-364-2829.

Radio and television station announcements concerning adjustments in the school schedule due to inclement weather will be made on the following stations:

Please do not contact administrators, secretaries, bus drivers, or teachers about school closings, but listen to the above mentioned radio and television stations as they are the very first to receive notice after a thorough evaluation of road and weather conditions.

It is the policy of the district to hold classes whenever possible.  However, school will be canceled whenever it is determined that the school buses will have difficulty completing their routes.  The administration is interested in insuring the safety of the students and must also carry out the assigned task of education.  The final decision whether a child should be kept home because of the weather rests with the parent.  Any time parents are worried about bad roads or weather, they should keep their child at home.

If it appears most roads will become passable early in the morning, the start of school at both buildings may be delayed one (1) hour.  A delay in school starting time will be announced on the appropriate stations.

When school is in session and a winter storm is entering the area, attempts may be made to dismiss classes early to ensure that all students can reach home safely.  Please make arrangements for your child’s care in case of early release due to inclement weather.

All buses are equipped with cellular phones. Drivers are in constant contact with the bus barn.
